Great Race Nutrition

Great Race Nutrition is sponsoring the Kent State University Running Club for the Fall 2011-Spring 2012 season. The club couldn't be more excited as Great Race Nutrition is a Cleveland-based company and always has in stock a wide variety of products from companies like Accelerade, Bodyglide, Clif Bar, First Endurance, Fuel Blet, Gu Energy, Hammer Nutrition, Honey Stinger, Nuun, and Powerbar to name some few.

Nothing is worse than 'running' out of your to-go fuel. This also allows our runners to try different fuel options to see what may work best for each individual.

Thanks again Great Race Nutrition!
Kent State Running Club is gearing up for a great fall season.

Updates for the Fall Semester!

I hope everyone is having a great summer so far!

Few Updates:
I am turning in paperwork to renew the Kent State Running Club with student organizations tomorrow as well as funding paperwork and the Blastoff  "Freshman" Student Organizations Event the Sunday before class begins. I will need some volunteers to help out August 28 5:30-9:00pm to pass out flyers and represent KSU RUN CLUB!

Club Dues:
At our first meeting we will finalize $10 per member for the Fall and Spring semester for club dues. This will go towards flyers,  a Kent State Running Club banner, and food provided for meetings that will take place monthly at the beginning of the month. If we have excess funds leftover-they will be applied purchasing Kent State Running Club shirts.

Design ideas for the logo are more than welcome as we go into our second printing of Kent State Running Club shirts.

Post your Race Reports!
Let us know what you have been doing this summer!!

Tree City 5k in Kent!

Yesterday I ran the Tree City 5k here in Kent. The race started from Dix stadium and took us through the bike bath leading to campus and through campus. Anymore, these 5k's have been feeling fast and I havent been able to run any great ones lately. The results arent posted yet but I managed a time around 18:25 in the hot and humid afternoon. This was good enough to win my age group and get me some hardware anyways so I cant complain too much! lol It was also great because I got to run with my bud and former Marietta teammate Sean Hoover! He showed me how it was done by running a very respectable 17:05 to take 2nd overall!! I thought they put on a great race and I enjoyed it.

"The best runner leaves no tracks"- Tao Te Ching

I woke up this morning craving the kind of sustenance that only comes with a decent latte, which in turn requires the new Arcade Fire album from the library (ask me if you want it;)) and something decent to read, so I headed to downtown in lu of things more engaging, and happily so. While I was trolling stuff at the library I actually came across something really interesting, which hasn't happened for me in a couple months (33 Men, sadly, is maybe the worst, most drab nonfiction I've ever read).

The book is called Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. It is about this Men's Health writer, who is an oft-injured jogger who goes in to see a few specialists about a spiking pain in the heel of his foot that he got after a 3-mile run. He isn't happy with the diagnosis (cortisone and more cortisone, and a recommendation to switch from running to biking), so he travels to Mexico to study arguably the greatest distance runners on the planet, the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico's Copper Canyons, who supposedly compete in the world's severest 50-mile exclusive trail races on routes known only to them.

In addition to the neat cultural aspects of the book, or perhaps in response to it, McDougall is constantly fact-finding the answer to the question of what makes the greatest distance runners the greatest. In the first few chapters alone he offers interesting, little known facts about runners, such as that 8 out 10 runners are injured every year and that the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons think that distance running is "an outrageous threat to the integrity of the knee".

OK, so obviously anyone reading this blog didn't need a book to tell them that! But you have to read it yourself for the good stuff. But his major argument is that the best runners are barefoot runners, and he poses a very interesting argument. Check it out for yourself sometime. It might make you think twice about those toe-fitting shoes.

Great Rain Run

My legs felt great today as I 'broke' in a new pair of trail shoes from Pine Lane to just short of the Boston Store in the rain with Jeff. For months I haven't felt good on the trails due to injury, etc but today was great and I didn't even fall!!

Once I got back to Kent I went to another another jog for an easy 1 mile then did 2 x 1/2 mile intervals with a 1 mile in between on the track. Let's just say there is still some life in my legs..I wasn't trying to go all-out but ran my splits in 2:49 then 2:44. I'll take it.

Training is getting back to being more consistent. School has been throwing off my rhythm lately. Tonight if I can muster up the effort I'll try to do a light trainer ride while tomorrow will consist of an early gym workout lifting, and a training ride between 2-5pm. Sorry again guys I will be missing the KSU group run. It'll be my birthday though I can do what I want right?

Thursday I'll be at the CRTR group run for the epic Easter egg followed by the Lizard...Saturday I plan on going to RATL racing well I'll see how the legs feel.

That's it yo.

Don't Disturb the Natives

They'll get angry if you use their (allegedly) private drives for a running detour. It's a been a great week since the race-a-thon of 5k's and 25k's ppl have been running lately. This week, running club has gone at least fifteen miles between our two runs so far and it's great to see that kind of mileage after a vexing winter. Today we took a left-hand route down the river, eventually passing the water plant and into unknown territory (Jacob even lost track of where we were) and many of us were going at a very commendable pace. Be forewarned however: Come back from whence you came, lest the locals become aware of your presence on the Forbidden Path!

Live another day, learn another lesson, that's the word. And tell ppl about running club!

Jackson Laughs Race, Mugs & Muffins and the Monday Factory Run!

Hi everyone!
I hope everyone is doing well as we approach the end of the Spring semester. I have been speaking with the  the Kent State Alumni Association. They are putting together an event for us-The Kent State Running Club called “Mugs & Muffins” along with Student Organizations across campus.  The Alumni Association would like to stop by during one of your last meetings of the year to provide your organization with coffee and muffins.  The Alumni Association is trying to build relationships with other student organizations to see how we can both work together on future endeavors.

So mark in down!
We are celebrating the end of the Spring semester after the April 27 Wednesday 6pm group run. At 7pm in the student center's Hub we will enjoying "Mugs & Muffins" with the Kent State Alumni Association! I am trying to get my hands on some donated running products to raffle off and if that is not enough- I will be giving out awards for the 2011 Spring KSU RUN Club! Even if you cannot make the run, this will be a great way to recap the semester.
I will also go over some information the the 2011 Fall semester.
(1) We will have a booth at Blast-Off. This is an event that highlights different organizations on campus to new students.
(2) Renewing paperwork for Fall
(3) Briefly discuss officers for next semester. Voting will take place in September.

The Factory Run!
A few of us went out for a great rain run following the 'factory route'. I think Jeff named it-Once going towards downtown Kent, make your way to Lake Street where you can enjoy the site of the factories down to Second Street. The link of the route is posted shortly.

Jackson Laughs 5k & 25k:
April 9: Jackson Laughs 5k/25k
This event need volunteers to assist with aid stations and registration. Jackson Laugh road race is on behalf of the National Fragile X Foundation. For more information, visit http://www.jacksonlaughs.com/. I have been assisting with this event and it would be awesome to see the Kent State Running Club out in full force! Feel free to email me for questions at sharpe1@kent.edu.

I will have flyers for the Kent State Running Club with me at Jackson Laughs 5k & 25k. I would be greatly appreciate if a few members wouldn't mind passing out these flyers to help promote the club on campus! If your interested in helping, let me know!

I promised y'all I was going to post the squirrel song.. It goes something like this.....Black squirrel, black squirrel shake your bushie tail, black squirrel, black squirrel shake your bushie tail, wrinkle up your little nose, put a nut between your toes, black squirrel, black squirrel shake your bushie tail!

Conclusion:
The end of the year celebration will take place at 7pm (following the Wednesday 6pm night run) in the student center! Mugs (coffee) and muffins will be provided by the Kent State Alumni Association.
-Awards will be given out
-Possibly some raffle prizes
-Free food and cool people!
What's not to love?

April Fools Day

3 of us Jeff, Louie, and I met up at the student center today at 3pm. Was quite warm and yet a little breezy, much better weather for a run. Amazing what 2 days can do from Snowing to Sunny. Oh Ohio. Anyways, we decided to do that 5k course they have marked around campus a few days early. Ran up East Summit to Main and then just around the main bus hub past the music center and all the way around towards the Ice Arena etc. The "big loop" as I am now calling it. Today was definitely some form of high school tours of the campus. There was groups of about 10-50 walking around different areas of the campus. Why does someone always feel the urge to yell "Run Forrest Run" when they see a group of people running by them? LOL like first off haven't they ever seen another running movie? and 2nd Forrest Gump wasn't even about running... it was a small part of that movie. Well I stopped on 1 loop a little over a 5k. I know we started at like 3:15 and I was sitting in my car by 3:42 so not sure what the time was I wasn't wearing a watch but i'm like the pace none the less. Jeff and Louie continued to do a 2nd loop i'm not sure on the details, I know they picked up the pace for sure.

See everyone monday possibly over the weekend in the rec.

Running in a Winter Wonderland

So 4 of us were awesome, insane, crazy, hardcore, dedicated whatever you want to call it. Jeff, Jacub, Greg and I met at the Student Center on campus once more and trekked on over to Louie's apartment. Ran up 6 flights of stairs found his place just by running down the halls looking for first names (HAHAHA). He didn't feel like running and I don't blame him. Then proceeded onto the Dix Stadium pathway same as we did Monday night. Snow and slush and puddles galore. Crossed a few bridges covered in like 2 inches of the stuff. On the way back we took a detour through a snowy unmarked path into the woods. Was it actually a shortcut? who knows.. it was adventurous.

- 4.7 miles lots of snow.. hoping for better weather around here somewhere.

See you all on Friday April 1st

3pm right?

Tuesday Rec Center Track run

Well not an official meetup time, but made some small plans to maybe meet each other at the Rec tonight. Got there around 7pm Greg and I found Louie and Jeff and ended up doing speed intervals tonight. (My first interval workout) Warmed up with a mile probably what like 9 min? Someone let me know.. maybe even in the 8's we were cruising. Started a pyramid 200m fast 200m slow up to 400. The 3 of them pulled away a bit. Small water break in between. Greg, Louie, and Jeff started their 800m race pace as I did a 400. Ran for a good 35min or so total. Definitely the hardest run I have endured. Did a small amount of lifting after. Topped it off with a basketball shoot around. See everyone tomorrow for running club.

Monday to Dix Stadium Out and Back

So back from spring break tonight on this dreadful cold almost April night (isn't it spring? where is the weather?). 3 of us Louie, Jacub, and myself ran from the meet point in the student center to Dix Stadium. New trail to me it was fun. Stopped in the stadium for a few minutes (it was open). Continued back over a bridge and ended up slowing my own pace a bit. Not sure how far Louie and Jacub ran however Geodistance said I did somewhere in the 4.5-5 mile range. :) It was cold but sunny and dry. Hopefully it warms up by the time Jackson Laughs rolls around on the 9th. Good run you guys, see everyone Wednesday.

Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Race Report

I hope everyone is enjoying their spring break and isn't slacking off on the training too much. I had the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach this Sunday and it was nice to see the ocean. I got there on Saturday and the expo was awesome. A whole convention hall with big name vendors and running stores for all the gear you wanted. It was also nice to try samples of some new products and sports drinks. Big events like this usually have giant expo's and great discounts on lots of gear. My sister got a pair of bright orange Newton running shoes. As Adam would say "2 Flashy." Anyways like the 5 other marathons I have done I wasn't healthy. The night before I felt a lot worse than just a simple sore throat and went to a walk in clinic. Doctor said I had a sinus infection. In 2009 I had a sinus infection the day before this same race. I really don't know why I am so unhealthy for marathons and healthy for all my triathlons. Anyways I knew I would finish but it wouldn't be easy. Race morning was quite chilly. It was about 40 degrees and very windy with the beach being only a block away. The Half Marathon started at 7am and the Marathon at 8am. The start of the race was fairly organized with corrals based on finish time being released every minute. Starting thousands of people at once is very overwhelming and it is easy to accidentally roll your ankle on someone (Philly 2008). I made sure to not go out too fast but with thousands of people around you it is not easy. Even with your Garmin telling you your pace it is so easy to go out too fast. In a 26.2 mile race this is something that you cannot do. If you expend too much energy in the early parts of a race, you will pay for it later. I maintained my pace and kept trucking along. The first few miles things started to spread out and there was room for you to run. The spectators were great and the aid stations were well staffed. By mile 5 everyone was stripping off their long sleeve shirts and hats/gloves they started the race with. I settled into my pace and tried to take my mind off the fact that I couldn't get a deep breath and my legs started to hurt only a few miles in from the lack of oxygen flow to my muscles. I just kept rolling through motivational quotes in my mind like "3 letters not in your alphabet are DNF" and "you can quit and no one will care, but you will always know." By 17 I was in my runners zone and just kept putting one foot in front of another. This was the hardest part of the race since mile 17-21 there were very few spectators since we were on part of the Naval Base. There were soldiers earlier in the race but not now. It became hard to keep motivation. By mile 20 things got bad for a lot of people since this is the time people hit "The Wall." Miles 20-23, the side of the roads were littered with runners walking, stopping to stretch or simply bent over grimacing in pain. These are some of the people that went out too fast and I have been that person in past races. I always tell people, If you are feeling good at mile 15 and want to pick up the pace, wait until mile 20 to do it, when you hit mile 20 you WILL be hurting and won't want to pick up the pace and will be glad you conserved that energy. Once you hit mile 20 it becomes "oh it's only another 10K" but it is a long 10k. What becomes even worse is at miles 22-24 people saying "You are almost done!" It is a long last few miles and one girl had the correct sign that read "Classic spectator lie: You are almost done." Once I got to mile 24 I was running parallel to the beach and mentally it messed with you since you were at 70th street and had to get to the 30's. Of course you tell yourself "don't look at the signs" and you wind up looking at every single one. I tried to tell myself that my knees and legs weren't in agony and needed to toughen up! Those last few miles are simply mental. Before I knew it I was turning onto the boardwalk and running right along the beach. There were spectators for the last 3/4 mile and that really helped. Knowing there were kegs of Yeungling and Irish Stew at the end also provides motivation :). The last mile with all those spectators you feel invincible and with hundreds of people cheering it is an awesome feeling. I crossed the finish line with an official time of 3hrs 57min 27sec which is about 9 min miles. It was nice to finish my 6th marathon and healthy or not, once you cross that finish line, that can NEVER be taken away from you :)

Spring Break Awaits

Hi Runners-
This weeks evening Monday and Wednesday 6pm runs were well attended. Even some of the original run clubbers Kelly and Lexie came out on Wednesday. Great to see everyone...Who didn't show...at all..cough[Greg Kovats].. : ) After Adam mentioned he might be sleeping, our Monday night run had a mission wake up Greg and off to Campus Pointe we went!

Greg had a good point however for someone who does not like running in the mud...

If the Kent State Running Club was able to have a table at the Black Squirrel 5k and/or Jackson Laughs 5k/25k near registration, would we be able to find 4 volunteers total to talk about running club?
For example if the race beings at 8am, would anyone be willing to volunteer on behalf of the club from say 7:30ish-9:30ish approximately? I don't want to approach the race directors just yet if no one is willing to help..Email me at sharpe1@kent.edu and tell me your thoughts!

The next group run is Friday at 3pm. Remember attendance might be slower than usual with Spring Break...I might be there...TBD. I will be at the Saturday trail run. Details are posting are the group run tab.

Sunday Raceday & Monday Night Adventure Run

Happy Monday!
Now don't act like you are so excited to be entering the 8th week of the semester?!? CRAZY.
Okay down the businessessess. (This is how I type/think after caffeine and past 11pm)

Monday Night Adventure Run
Greg, Jake? (ahh I am sorry I cannot quite remember your name) and myself went on quite the 'adventure' run today. I decided to guide them on the river run. Well-the river is flooded. I mean FLOOOOODED. We detoured a few times and when we came to the covered bridge traveling West bound on the hike n' bike trail it then became dangerous so we made our way back to Kent State. I am sure Greg is cursing me out for getting his Newton running shoes wet...The run was at a moderate pace with Greg putting in a BEASTLY 14 MILES...He said he felt squirrely. Rest of us stopped at a solid 4-miler run for the night. Great run guys. I enjoyed it. I was able to get in another 3. Very successful day indeed!

Sunday Race day
The Kent State Running Club is going to represent at the NCN Racing Catch a Leprechaun 5k/15k/30k running road race this Sunday with races beginning at 8 am. 5 racers from what I hear will be participating in a combination of all three events. I will be there cheering, snapping some sweet race pictures in support and/or running. TBD Saturday afternoon for me, but I will be there! On the fence? C'mon out and be apart of it! A link is posted on the previous post.

Lastly, if you are interested in being added to the Kent State Running Club Email List-send all inquiries to Sara Harper at sharpe1@kent.edu. Only myself, Sara, has access to this list and it is kept private. After writing up a new post-once a week I send the link and any other important information out in a short email to the list recipients. You may also request to be taken off the list at anytime. I do it to help you-the runners-get the information you need.

Happy Running!

Myth Busters Edition: Run Club Style

Myth Busters Edition: Run Club Style

1) Is Running in the Cold Bad for Your Lungs?
http://www.active.com/triathlon/Articles/Is-Running-in-the-Cold-Bad-for-Your-Lungs.htm?cmp=306&memberid=106609480&lyrisid=21444842
Myth: Busted. If you have a pre-existing condition such as asthma or a respiratory infection, you could be more susceptible. BUT to the normal runner-if you use common sense and dress appropriately, you will be fine. Check out this link above for more details.

2) Not Just Anyone Can Complete a Marathon (26.2mi)
http://www.active.com/running/Articles/6-Steps-for-the-First-Time-Marathoner.htm
Myth: Busted. There are some great beginner training plans out there to help get from start to finish. There is also a walker's division in most races. Don't let the the number scare you. Start smaller at a half-marathon and build your confidence! You would be surprised of what you are capable of accomplishing.

Other News
Shirts-The artwork for the shirts was approved this morning so they are going to print. I will send out updates as soon as I know. Thanks for being patient.

Monday Track Workout-This past Monday at 6pm-Greg, myself, Miranda, and Louis did a modified track workout in the Kent rec center. If blizzard like conditions are taking place..Maybe this should be the alternative? Thoughts??

Today's run is at 6pm-meeting at the student center as usual.
If you want to help distribute flyers-let me know, we have lots printed!

I do apologize I personally will not be able to run at 6pm this evening-I will be at Ohio Indoor Cycling and Friday 3pm I will be out of town at that time. If anyone would like to fun Friday morning-let me know. Probably an easy 6 or so miles.

Saturday's Trail Run-the info and location is a post or two back. I will be there on Saturday and running easy for a 15k trail race this Sunday.

Happy Running!

Running Club-The Takeover

So it begins. The plan is to have a flyer on every board on Kent State-main campus of course. Let's see those numbers at group runs continue to grow!

Greg was nice enough to offer modifying the current flyer to add those handy-nandy tear-off tabs to the bottom of the flyers. I am asking the officers in particular to hang up flyers. Once it's approved-100 Copies hopefully will be posted on boards across the Kent campus. Running Club is takin' over. If you too would like a few copies to hang up-let me know and I get you a few!

*Snowday*
I hope everyone enjoys their snowday today. Sleep in (I was just too excited and woke up at 6:30am anyway), enjoy the day off, and be safe! Remember it is indeed icy today. I would not suggest running outside, if you do, wait till midday. This is just one of the those days where the recreation center might be a better option. You can have serious injury falling on ice-use precautions!

Kent Read Kent Write Kent Remeber It's Almost February!

Kent Read Kent Write Kent Remember It's Almost February!
Hello hello!
Just a few small items today:

1) I have placed the t-shirt order. I have ordered a few extras. 1-medium and 2-small shirts can still be available to purchase

2)As for the shirt order, it should take around 4 weeks for turn around and for me to receive them. THEREFORE-I will step up a small meeting most likely for 7pm on a Tuesday evening in Nixson so those who have ordered a shirt or want to purchase one of the extras, may in fact do so. That meeting will be around the end of Feb/beginning of March.

3) Saturday Trail Run! (And Sunday if you prefer!)
Lydia came out and joined me and the rest of the GGR Gang (15 or so runners) for a great trail run this Saturday morning. This upcoming Saturday, Feb 5th, I have to take a CPR Certification class at the rec center at the same time.

If you would like to run with this group-here is the information:
Saturday, Feb. 5 10:15 a -Oakhill Trailhead, multiple loops in the same area, choose your own distance and time, 1-2 hours. Bathrooms but no running water.

Sunday, Feb. 6
8 am Ledges Shelter.  Multiple loops available, choose your own distance. Restrooms and running water.
Saturday, Feb. 12 10:15 am – Cover Bridge/Perkins Trail where Wheatley Road becomes Everett Road. Intersecting Loop Trails, 5 mile main loop.  Bathroom, no water. ****I will be doing a light-light run this day because I (Sara Harper) am racing the 15k Run with your Heart race in the North Chagrin Reservation.

4) I heard we had good turnouts throughout the week! Keep up the good work and please post flyers I sent out from the previous email in your buildings!! What to run with more people?? Recruit!

First Group Runs, Cool-Fun-Interesting Facts, Pick-up Run

Both group runs today went off well from the feedback I heard. Great to hear guys!! Don't worry I promise Spring will be around the cover in no time!

Cool-fun-interesting fact #1 : Running in the snow adds the resistance-therefore it takes more energy to overcome it...Basically those runners who run outside in the snow (safely) on most occasions are FASTER in the spring than those runners who are confined to those blasted treadmills!

PICK-UP RUN TOMORROW-THURSDAY NIGHT 6PM!!
A few of the runners said that they were going to run tomorrow night-same starting/end point. C'mon out and join for some winter running fun!

In other NEWS! Jeff V. will be our new Treasurer for the Spring 2011 Semester...
Wanna help out? There is still a position available-Historian! Email me for details! Sharpe1@kent.edu

Greg Kovats was nice enough to send me a link to Active.com for some much needed tips for RUNNING in COLD WEATHER. Let's be honest, Northeast Ohio feels like the North Pole these days...If you haven't heard me mention it before: FROSTBITE IS FOREVER!!!!  So be smart! Check it this article with important tips!

Shirt Orders!

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to give you all an update on this shirts.
For those of you that might not know, we will be placing our first order very shortly-hopefully at our FIRST MEETING: Jan 25 (Tuesday) at 7pm-Nixson Rm 102.

Design:
Front: Kent State Running Club (blue lettering)
(KSU Logo)-screen print
shirt color will be yellow/gold in technical material-not cotton.
Back: Run Like You Stole Something (letter color black or blue-depending on cost difference)
Black Squirrel-screen print.

I will have the updated version posted online here probably in a day or so. I finally found a person to go through for the design. PLEASE-especially if you would like to place an order, and cannot attend our first meeting-tell me prior to Jan 25.

Price estimate is $15 each. Not bad considering front and back print and lettering and its a material that is COMFY to run in! The shirts will be at cost! WE are not charging extra or making an profit on them either. This is a great way how we can represent ourselves. With that being said, if anyone thinks the back print of the shirt might be a problem-please submit an alternate idea.

Thanks Guys.

Proceeds for this event to go the Fragile X Organization. Jackson was born with the genetic mutation and effects 100,000 Americans.  The race will begin at the Kent State Dix Stadium and will be an amazing event. Not ready to race? Volunteer! I can contact the race organizer to set it up. I've talked with Jackson's father, the race organizer, and said that I would do the best to make sure that the Kent State University Running Club would come out in full force!!
